I prefer perplexity, doubt, uncertainty, not just because it provides a more 'productive' literary raw material, but because that is the way we humans really are.
I agree the movie does not live up to the hype. Perhaps am missing out on the American psyche aspect given that almost all reviews begins that way. You know ....epic American nightmare. ....Great American Movie...American Dream... and the rest.The acting was good though.
Oh yes, Daniel Day Lewis and his overwhelming 'madness' were the only things that made the movie bearable. This whole 'American Dream' is beyond me - I read American Pastoral a few days ago and was again puzzled at its high stature. So many people have attempted to draw this caricature of American success/disaster, that you are forced to wonder if the country is somehow 'bewitched'
